- today was our Terry Fox Run and Shave your Head for Cancer. It was an amazing day with fantastic energy and enthusiasm. Congratulations to everyone who were involved with running the assembly, singing the national anthem, being an MC, helping students cross safely and run with their Kindergarten buddies. - today we reviewed what a paragraph is and compared it to one of Mrs. Secord-Tomlin's favorite food. What does the bun represent? - we read some more of the book "Wonder" and finished his first day of school. Tomorrow and Thursday we will make text to self connections from the book to our first days in grade 5 this year - we had our first day of Buddies with the morning Kindergarten class. What is the name of your buddy? - during math we did our "addition mad minutes" and graphed our results. Please remember to sign and return daily. Every night, students will be responsible for making their corrections and completing their Mad Minutes. - In math we started working on math word problems. What strategy did we use to solve the problems today? - We started watching the movie "Revolution" today. What questions did it raise for you? - today was the first day we switched for Science. The Grade 6's went with Ms. Hammond to learn more about Trees and Forests while the Grade 5's stayed with Mrs. Secord-Tomlin for the Weather unit. - after sketching their own ideas of how to set up our class for the best learning. We had a run-off vote to decide which set up we would use and it came down to a tie between Sam's idea and Trenton's. Which plan did we use for our class and how do we feel about our new seating arrangement. - we practiced using the writing skill of "show don't tell" by changing the sentence, "The music was loud", into something that shows us instead of telling us after finishing sharing the rest of our "foggy" sentences from last weekend - we read some more of the book "Wonder", almost finishing August's first day of school - during math we started "addition mad minutes" and graphed our results. We will be keeping track of our results to watch our improvements. Every night, students will be responsible for making their corrections and completing their Mad Minutes. - today was international Character Day, and to celebrate we had two guest readers come in and read us a book related to Character - we brainstormed what good writers do - we practiced using the writing skill of "show don't tell" by changing the sentence, "It was foggy", into something that shows us instead of telling us - we reflected on the quotes of "You are a conductor of light" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and "Strong people don't put others down. They lift them up" by Michael P. - we compared numbers using <, > and = - played a math game called "Make the Greatest Number", ask me how to play and maybe over the next few days play a game or two - we played a class cooperative game that made us think about using the basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) in number sentences using all of the numbers from 1-30. Ask me how successful we were today and what strategies we are going to try tomorrow - we read some more of the book "Wonder" today.
