What we did today:
- today we edited a piece of writing from the board to help us practice the editing phase of the writing process. We also looked at word choice in my writing, thinking about better word choice. Once we completed the editing, we were to reflect on how our lives will impact our Point of View and Perspective. - during PE, we played ringette games. - we read some more of "Wonder" today. What was the most interesting part of the book that we read today? - We are continuing to use cubism on our portraits. What part of your portrait is most reflective of you. - in science, both grades worked on their projects. The grade 5's also learned about the water cycle and how it makes clouds. - in math, we continued investigating number sense using partial numbers. How can we communicate our understanding with standard form, expanded form, written form and plotting numbers on a number line. Please send in any you may have over the next few weeks to the Idea Lab. Canstruction Canstruction Club just began this week with the grade 5 and 6’s who signed up! We will be designing and creating a structure out of non-perishable food items as part of a contest in partner with the Mayor’s 28th Annual Christmas Food Drive for the Calgary Food Bank. The project is called Canstruction Jr. We are asking for donations to help us build our structure and are specifically looking for green items such as cans and boxes that are green in colour. - we brainstormed questions for our news article - during PE, we worked on our puck handling skills in floor hockey - we finished the movie "Revolution" - we read to the end of the book that is shared from Via's perspective in "Wonder" - in grade 5 science, we collected today's weather data and discussed what impacts the weather. We then tested our hypothesis about hot air rising and cold air sinking by checking thermometers set up throughout our class to see if our hypothesis was correct. How did we test the hypothesis that hot air rises? - We finished our subtraction mad minutes today. Next week we start mad minutes with both addition and subtraction. We have math quizzes tomorrow. Grade 5 is on expanded form, written form and standard form. Grade 6 is on rounding to help estimate using multiplication. The first group of people that we have chosen to help live right in our city. We will be collecting winter coats, boots, hats, scarves, mitts, and snow pants that are gently used. These items will be for Syrian Refugees from Keeler school in Calgary, where Ms. Georg is now teaching. The refugees have left their homes with nothing but themselves. (Think about it if you did not have a warm winter coat walking out into the snow). Please bring in sizes for age 4 and up. Please help out! Donations can be brought to Mrs. McKay’s classroom.
